How to Write a Good Post for Facebook

What is a Good Post?

A good post, sadly ^^, is not necessarily an interesting post. Don’t get me wrong, some posts are actually successful because they contain a really informative or beautiful message =). However, what people consider a good post on facebook these days is a post that gets maximum “likes” and “share”. No more, no less.

A post that creates buzz! In other words, a good post is a post that gets a lot of attention, no matter what it’s about. Most of the time such posts are completely silly, which always makes me wonder about the intellectual level of the planet…. but that’s not today’s topic!

If you landed here chances are you don’t need tips on what to write about, but on HOW to engage people properly on facebook in order to get maximum attention ! So without further ado here are just for you my tips and advice !

Ask a Question

What better way to engage people than to ask them a question. Do you expect people to come talk to you in the street if you don’t go to them and ask them something? (what time is it? where is the train station? can I have your number? ^^) And don’t tell me social media is not the same as real life ! If you want people to come talk to you, asking them a question is a pretty decent way to get things started =)

Tip : don’t ask open questions. Give people an easy choice of answers… Making it easier for people to engage will result in more comments. Remember laziness is human nature ^^. If you don’t know what to ask, ask for advice, create quizzes, ask for tips… and avoid questions that require too much thinking lol. Here’s a great free website to create quizzes and polls : www.opinionstage.com

Be Concise

In other terms, keep it short ladies and gentlemen! Keep in mind that most people are following tens of people and not just you =). And a facebook wall looks pretty much like a very long newspaper… your audience will very often skim through posts quickly as a result and won’t bother reading what look like long winded posts.

Tip : I recommend using 40-100 characters. Keeping it short will enable you to get to the point, quickly =) Posts with 40 characters receive 86% more engagement than posts with a higher character count

Tell People What You Want Them to Do

Be clear on what you expect your readers to do after reading your post. This crucial step is called a “call-to-action” and it can take various shapes : take this form, answer this questionnaire, take this quizz, signup to newsletter, share on facebook, like, leave a comment, etc.

Tip : keep it a little bit mysterious =) … intrigued people are more likely to go on and click on a link

Write Unique Content

You want your readers to see your posts and go “wow this looks fun/interesting/weird/beautiful/wrong…” and not just go “nah, boring”. The trick is for you to say enough for them to want to take action, but not too much so they will get bored and leave before reaching your call-to-action. Oh and don’t try too hard : be yourself, be natural. =) If you try too hard people will know and will not like it.

Tip : people don’t care about how boring your job is or what you had for breakfast (unless you have a blog and post recipes and pictures of course!). Be interesting and unique.

Use Links

You probably already knew that but inserting a link within your post will enable you to take your readers to a particular place online you want them to visit (your website for example!). If you give them too much information inside your post, chances are they won’t even need to click on your link, so as I said before give them enough to entice them to do something but not too much ^^

Shine!

People respond to positivity, with … positivity =) Most of the time at least. If your post is filled with a sense of humor or a positive state of mind people will sense it and will automatically be drawn to it. Would you rather comment on a post and share it if it were positive or negative? You get the point. =)

Tip : make people smile. Make them laugh. The world is gloomy enough as it is, nobody needs a party killer ahah

Use Visuals

It’s a fact : most people don’t like to read too much. They are just like kids and love images =) A picture is very powerful, it instantly carries a message, an emotion, a memory, a thought… No wonder why Pinterest is all the rage the days! People just love looking at images, whether they are beautiful, scary, weird, funny and so on.

Post At non-peak Hours

You compete with hundreds of thousands of posts that appear on the news feeds of your followers. If you post your updates when few others are posting, your updates have a better chance of making it through. Run tests if you have to, see what posts get more views, shares and likes.

Tip : I recommend posting three times a day

Use Videos

People spend a lot of time watching videos online, you want to take advantage of that ! Here are some interesting figures that might change your mind about videos :

  • More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
  • YouTube is localized in 56 countries and across 61 languages
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network
  • Millions of subscriptions happen each day, and the number of people subscribing has more than doubled since last year
